Today, the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, let’s celebrate Candraprabha (Moonlight) Bodhisattva’s Birthday. This Bodhisattva is also known as the All-illuminating Moonlight Bodhisattva or the Clear-moon Bodhisattva.
According to the Sutra on the Original Vows of the Medicine-Master Tathāgata of Lapis Light, the Buddha said to Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva that there are two great bodhisattvas in the pure land of Medicine-Master Tathāgata of Lapis Light, one is Sūryaprabha (Sunshine) and the other Candraprabha. They are the most senior ones among the infinite number of bodhisattvas in that pure land and they will attain Buddhahood successively upholding the true Dharma of the Medicine-Master Tathāgata. Also, in Volume Twelve of the Empowerment Sutra, it reads: “Two bodhisattvas, one titled Sūryaprabha, the other Candraprabha, are in the position of succeeding the Buddha in the future.”
The moonlight, brisk, bright, and pure, constantly pervades the sky, illuminating the dark night and quelling the defiled minds. Seeing it, one admires it; gazing at it, people would not feel like having enough; it is beyond description. An ode says, the samadhi of moonlight illumines the universe, forever benefiting sentient beings in dharma realm. Upon even a single ray of its pure and perfect light, our mind is purified and Chan is revealed all around us. As we look up at the bright moon and the moon sheds light on us, we should contemplate the Bodhisattva’s loving kindness, compassion and wisdom, and develop resolve to learn from the Bodhisattva and bring light and purity to the world.
