Ritual of Right Action:
Honoring the Earth through Service
September 20th, 2025
On a crisp and sunlit morning, Jinyin Temple members gathered with joyful hearts at the Middle Smithfield Township building, where township organizers welcomed participants and provided supplies for the day’s work. After a few words of orientation and encouragement, the temple group, twelve volunteers strong, prepared themselves in a spirit of unity and purpose, ready to begin a meaningful journey of service.
From there, participants set forth toward Route 209, walking together from the Bushkill Meeting Center (National Park Service) toward the Indian Museum. This 3-mile stretch, lined with forested hills and flowing waters, became more than just a roadside cleanup—it unfolded as a ritual of compassion, mindfulness, and gratitude.
As the volunteers moved steadily along the roadside, each piece of litter collected was more than refuse removed from the earth—it was an act of purification, a symbolic offering of care and renewal. Passing vehicles often honked in greeting and praise, their sounds carrying encouragement and recognition for the noble effort. By the end of the walk, the group had gathered more than 20 full bags of trash, a tangible expression of dedication and collective merit.
The rhythm of walking, bending, and lifting became a meditation in motion, connecting body and mind to the greater work of safeguarding the environment. Amidst the hum of traffic and birdsong, the presence of mindful footsteps brought harmony to the path.
Throughout the journey, temple members reflected upon the Buddha’s teaching of Right Action. Just as one practices the precepts to preserve harmony in human relationships, so too does tending to the earth embody respect and compassion for all beings. The shade of trees, the breath of fresh air, and the gentle flow of the nearby river reminded everyone of nature’s role as both teacher and refuge.
Upon reaching the Indian Museum, the group paused in gratitude. Some shared words of appreciation, while others offered silent prayers, dedicating the day’s merit for the well-being of all beings. What began as a community service event had become a sacred act of blessing—an offering of care to the land, to the people who travel upon it, and to all life supported by it.
In the spirit of Dharma joy, the twelve temple volunteers worked shoulder to shoulder, each contributing their energy according to their capacity. This unity reflected the true heart of the sangha: individuals walking together in shared purpose, transforming simple action into sacred ritual.
Jinyin Temple extends heartfelt gratitude to Middle Smithfield Township, to all the organizers, and to the temple members who gave their time and energy to this noble endeavor.
May the merit of this day’s work protect the earth, uplift the community, and inspire compassion in all hearts.
May the earth be clean and protected. May harmony flourish among people and nature.
May the Dharma light continue to guide our every step.
